Impairment Goggles Kit Program

We are excited to offer Impairment Goggle Kits available for loan to support your alcohol education programs, classrooms, or community events.

Each kit includes five pairs of goggles that simulate the visual and motor impairment effects of alcohol at varying blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels from .06 to .25.

These goggles are powerful tools for hands-on demonstrations, helping participants experience how alcohol can impair coordination, judgment, and motor skills, all in a safe, controlled setting.

Program Purpose

Our goal is to support substance use prevention efforts by:

  • Promoting responsible alcohol use.
  • Educating youth on the dangers of underage drinking.
  • Encouraging healthy, informed decision-making.

These kits help bring those lessons to life through experiential learning.

How to Borrow a Kit

Kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are available for one week. Extension available on request.

Activity Ideas

All activities suggested below will be most successful if participants are required to perform each task while “sober” and then again while wearing the impairment goggles.

Nail Hammering

Start several long nails in a board.  Ask participants to finish hammering in a nail. You can make a rule that they need to hammer the nail in two or three shots.

Throwing Balls/Making Baskets/Playing Cornhole

Ask participants to shoot baskets with a basketball, or set up a container and try to hit the target using nerf balls or beanbags, etc. Two participants can throw a ball to each other and attempt to catch it.

Remote Control Driving Course

Set up a course and ask participants to drive a remote-control car through the course.

Keyboarding Challenge

Require participant to take a timed typing test.  Count how many mistakes were made while wearing/not wearing the goggles.

Coin Pick Up

Scatter some coins on the floor and ask participants to bend over to pick them up while standing on one leg.

Pin the Tail on the Donkey

Play the traditional game, but instead of being blindfolded, participants are wearing the goggles.

Jenga

Set up a Jenga game and ask participants to play the game.

Popcorn Catch

Have participants throw popcorn in the air and catch it in their mouths.  Have a team competition to see who can catch the most.

Hi Five

Have participants give each other a high five.

Safety Guidelines
  • Ensure that the area where the goggles will be used is clear from tripping hazards including desks, chairs, uneven floors, etc.
  • Do not ask participants to climb stairs.
  • Individuals who are prone to motion sickness should have the option of not wearing the goggles. They can be very disorienting.
  • When setting up obstacle courses be sure to provide adequate space so that participants do not collide with one another.
  • Do Not allow participants to wear the goggles for more than 10 minutes at a time. The wearer can adapt to the change in vision and the demonstration will become less effective.

Together, We Make an Impact
